Why Does The America Media Portray Nascar To Be For Hillbilly Rednecks?

Is this true? I am curious. I figure there would also be some rich educated fans of the sport too.

Considering that you have only been on Y!A a month I will assume the following, all others can take their choice(s).
1. You have never attended a race. Without first hand knowledge how can you make a generalization like that.
2. You just don’t know much about this sport. Go, sit and watch a race live, I bet you will like it.
3. There are rich people involved in this sport. Go to a race and check some of the mobile homes. The drivers “Diamond Coaches” are close to a million $$. The average camper in the infield will set you back over 100 grand.
4. If you look around enough in any area, NASCAR involved or not, you can find trailers with people living in them. I have seen more trailers in areas that have nothing to do with NASCAR than I can count. Try looking around St. Louis, Los Angeles, Seattle.
5. You are a troll.

NASCARS roots are based on moon shiners braggng about how fast their cars were and racing them. That means guys were building cars in their garages and front/back yards. Given that it was a win by all means type of sport, dominated by whites, in the deep south, most uneducated, stereotypical, narrowminded people would associate that with rednecks. That couldnt be any further from the truth. NASCAR is sport that is technology driven. Some of the finest mathematicians and enginners around design and build these cars. NASCAR is also a sponsor driven sport meaning that it takes some pretty savvy business people, incredibly sharp minds, and very talented drivers to ensure the sponsor public visibility that they desire. That doesnt sound very redneck to me.

The hillbilly rednecks are the ones who started NASCAR. In short, it started during prohibition in America, they would modify street cars to make them go much faster to out-run the police.
That’s why it’s so deeply rooted for some of them.
Yes, there are people who are rich and/or educated who also watch it, but it’s marketed to the “good ol’ boys” mostly. The guys who are affiliated with NASCAR (drivers, owners, crew members, etc..) are mostly rich cowboys and rednecks! Not all of course, but a pretty big majority.

First of all, it’s not true! Entirely!
NASCAR was founded by southern redneck-type moonshiners, as others have stated.
They wanted a no-holds-barred, yet organized racing series, and untill the early 1990′s, it was.
They have been trying to portray a cleaner image, tighter rules for drivers – and spectators, and safer cars…..
It’s just not good for the spirit of the sport to make it safer and cleaner for mainstream America!
Now the sport is getting safer and cleaner, but it was much more exciting to watch Yarborough, Petty(Richard!), Earnhardt Sr, Waltrip Sr and others breaking rules, sliding into the pits at 110 MPH, passing WAY on the inside (in the grass!)

There are successful educated fans. I consider myself one. But if you go to a race, you will also see lots of people who look like they stepped out the woods for the first time all year. You’ll see a little bit of everything. But I’ve always said Nascar does a bad job of marketing the sport. Every one of my friends is a sports fan but they all, ALL, make fun of me for liking Nascar. Why? They don’t consider it a real sport. They think anybody could hop in one of those cars and compete. Nascar has done a poor job of tapping into the main stream sports fan. The guy who watches NFL and MBL, etc, have no respect for Nascar and I don’t see Nascar doing what it takes to attract these people.

Nascar started and spent many decades growing up in the south. Up until around the 1980′s most of the star drivers were born and bred in the south. Nascar has been trying to shed its redneck image, but that is a slap in the face to the people that raised the sport to the level it’s at now. You can be rich and educated, but still be a redneck.

I am from the UK and seen many NASCAR races when on holiday in the US, yes there are one or two people at the races who look a bit ga ga but you see that in any walk of life and sporting event. I have not picked up any references ragarding ‘hillbilly rednecks’ in your media but then I am only usually on holiday for two weeks at a time. I have met many wonderful people at the NASCAR races and had great times when there.
We get NASCAR on the TV here in the UK and it is portrayed as a very professional top motorsport.

A lot of people do stereotype Nascar fans as rednecks but, honestly it’s just a bunch of people that aren’t uptight and know how to have fun. I love going to the races and I know a lot of people that do, Non by the way are “rednecks”. If it wasn’t for people that are smart enough to make a car go 185 without loosing control then we wouldn’t have the amazing sport of Nascar. It’s all about technology mixed with having a good time!

Sherri T @ 10:24 pm #

I think this is a stereotype. There are “rednecks” associated with most sports – you’ve all seen them tailgating at the football game – you know who we’re talking about. However, I’ve been to the night race at Bristol and camped with the crowd there (and let me tell you the population swells) and there were more $100,000+ motorhomes and trailers out there than what you would consider “redneck” abodes.
I don’t understand why the stereotype continues except that it’s human nature to want to feel “better” than someone else, so that’s what I attribute those that call it a “redneck sport” or those who don’t want to consider it a sport.
When they give me a hard time about left turns, left turns, I talk to them about those stupid people running back and forth across a football field or the goofballs running round and round bases. It’s all in the eye of the beholder and what I’ve found is that those that think it’s a “redneck” sport – usually haven’t attended a race in their life.
Their Loss, I say!

In the early days moonshine was a big deal in the South especially in the hills. That has changed. Anyone who has been to a NASCAR race in the past few years knows that NASCAR fans come from all over and from different backgrounds. The media which still portrays us as ignorant hillbillies are actually showing their ignorance by refusing to believe that the fans have changed. Even those of us who had grandfathers in the moonshine trade don’t make it ourselves.

fluffy @ 8:59 am #

all I know is it takes more intelligence than any other sport to build a NASCAR race car and make it competitive on the circuit. If you wanna say hillbilly rednecks are smarter than the average person then there’s a new definition. Maybe it’s just the media where you live because I know these people get a lot of respect where i’m from. And I live way the heck up north.

???????? Maggie @ 12:50 pm #

It doesn’t. Well I guess it is whatever media you happen to be listening too. Maybe because it originated in the south and so that is probably why.
Personally I am miffed. I was born and raised in New York. a Yankee. A woman who works in corporate offices for the government so I’ll never be considered a redneck which stinks.

fedup195 @ 3:45 pm #

I dunno…. wait a minute let me ask ma wife… she might know..
“Hey , SIS!!! somebody want to know why the media portrays NASCAR to be for hillbilly rednecks… if you don’t know , call your ex husband, Uncle Willie”….

Christia @ 5:05 pm #

Because the American Media is ******* stupid and reports things the way they want them to be seen, never the way they really are.

truexfan @ 6:09 pm #

NASCAR fans come in all shapes, sizes and colors. If NASCAR is to be deemed for the Hillbilly Rednecks then you can call me COOTER.
