Why does it appear to be socially acceptable to denigrate rednecks/rural folks but not inner city ghetto folks?

is this a double standard?
I am not labeling people I am asking a question pertaining to the double standard – can you answer the question please – if you cannot then move along.
Yep you are correct Tom and several answers to my question clearly demonstrate what you have said.

rednecks dont care i guess. seems like they get even more proud upon being called a hick.

soul6ess @ 10:33 am #

Why are you labeling people?

Edit: Yes you are labeling people, Rednecks? Rural folk? inner city ghetto folk? You might as well make symbols for em too.. gawshhh

MegaTr[??]N @ 11:24 am #

A red neck is a white who holds themselves back, a ghetto Black is a victim of an almost impossible situation

matthew est.1995 @ 12:08 pm #

well i live in the ghetto. and its actually a nice place. accept for the crime every now and then. the people here are the same as the ones throughout other parts of the city.

rednecks on the other hand. are weird and annoying.

bruhman from the fifth flo @ 12:36 pm #

cuz inner city ghetto folks still got style swagger and a get rich or die trying mentality

rednecks dont dress right, they eat crap, have given up on life and smoke meth all day in a dirty roach infested trailer.

big difference. and why are you poor if you are white ? like wassup with that ? no obstacles in your path and yet you cannot succeed ?

Tom R @ 1:12 pm #

because our society of sheep are too afraid to upset anyone but white people. hence the infant idea “political correctness”

Stan P @ 1:25 pm #

It all depends on who does the denigrating.

It’s ok for everyone to slam whites, but it is not “politically correct” for whites to slam anyone else.

I agree, there is a double standard here. I don’t see Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson running to the rescue for rural whites.

Mr Clif @ 2:08 pm #

Redneck is more so of a culture and people in rural areas do not have life that hard, most people have life easy, the only thing you can die of is boredom. Also, many rednecks have the money and everything to get by, basically its like insulting a middle class family or an upper class family, no harm done. Imagine insulting a redneck being insulting a fellow classmate of yours who is not mentally handicapped and can take a joke.

Ghetto on the other hand and the inner city is a harsh place. Unlike our small towns, the cost of living in big cities is off the roofs. When living in a ghetto you can either do illegal things to get by or you can be stuck with a low paying job just barely supporting yourself, this is not the case in rural towns. Also, people in the ghetto go through so much, being beat up by some dumb kids and being insulted heavily, this rarely happens in rural places. Imagine insulting a kid who is in the mentally handicapped class and cannot even walk right, not so nice now is it.

Zumaria @ 2:47 pm #

It does? You must be new to this section of Culture and Groups, because usually in a 5 hour span, you will see at least 10 questions that denigrate inner city “ghetto” folks all the time. There is even a troll here who has a list of so called “ghetto” users, who he insults on a daily basis. So not sure if you mean here or in real life, I see they are both denigrated and insulted.

Bipolar Birdy @ 3:27 pm #

I have asked this same question

I don’t understand it either

I don’t like ANY stereotyping/criticism of a group of people and I take offense especially because I am a southern girl and I know some “rednecks” and they are cool people.

Chinese Dragon @ 4:08 pm #

cuz if we made jokes or whatever to the inner city folk, we’d be racist- though they can joke about us all the time.

blackwater @ 5:06 pm #

Jokes are about finding an acceptable way to point to the absurdities of the social norms of a culture. Most humor is pointed towards whichever group (as a sample) that can be considered as stereotypical of the village idiot behavior that you want to make an example of, at the time. While you may be stung by the Redneck joke; others including Rednecks as a subclass, need to express their understanding and or misunderstanding of the behavior that they perceive is inchoate in this subclass. Inner city poor culture or “Ghetto” ( a retrograde term in modern social terms now) as a subclass ,has been affirmed as a tragic place to be. Some things are just not funny. Rednecks are funny..
