It is not derogatory if you are one, and you MIGHT be a redneck if….

Rednecks are sadly universal .. they just have different names in different regions.

The sunlight is not strong enough to burn Canadians necks, thus causing the skin on their necks to turn a shade of red.

think of it as a colloquial phrase of endearment. like hooser or canuck

People refer to themselves as rednecks because they’re proud to be thought of as ignorant and bigoted. I guess people are kinder in Canada!.

You probably do. They just call themselves something different. In Indiana, where I was born, we called them hicks. Then I moved to Virginia and let me tell you… a true redneck is a sight to see. Some people call themselves rednecks but they aren’t. Rednecks perch thier hats on the top of their heads so if a gust of wind comes along is seems they would fly right off. They have snuff under thier lip and they spit all the time. And they probably haven’t showered in a month or so… Its quite scarey.

Actually, the rednecks I know are pretty proud of it!

It’s different, if you call yourself something.

Do you have another word for low, or working class, uncouth, country people?

Redneck is a Southern US term that refers to Southern people who prefer country type of life: pickup trucks, cowboys, country music, fishing & hunting, boot scootin’, swimming in a smimming hole instead of a pool, etc. And I would venturethat given that definition I’d say you do have rednecks in Canada, especially in Alberta & BC.

A redneck is someone who works outdoors for a living. The back of their neck was always darker than anything else. That’s how it started. It’s not derogatory at all. Some sissyboys may think so but it’s not. Rednecks work hard, but they play hard too. They like to hunt and fish, race cars, go mudding, have barbeques, and go swimming. Rednecks are actually some of the most honest and moral people in the USA, and we are deeply patriotic, and also God respecting. Some people mean redneck to be derogatory, as in ignorant, country, rough, and unsophisticated, but when you see what they are comparing us to (themselves) it’s no insult.
