Why do people in the US discriminate rural population calling them rednecks?

I think they live very well, you don’t see homeless people, don’t have as much crime as the uptowners have to suffer and their towns are much cleaner.

True. I live in a small town of about 20,000. The town is a lot cleaner than most cities I’ve been in. Take Norfolk, Va. for example. There are few places you can swim there, because of pollution.

Any sort of discrimination comes from people putting down others because they feel inadequate themselves ultimately.

Personally I prefer the term “SWAMP YANKEE”
because I come from New England

Hey, if you’re are a redneck, then you are a redneck…it’s more than geography…you can live in LA and still be one, and you can live in Huntsville, AL and not be one…

“Rednekness has got to be a disease, you catch it on your fingers and it just rolls right up your sleeves”…from one of Lyle Lovett’s songs.

Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with bein’ a redneck…I for one don’t use it as a put-down…you is one if you is one…

Actually, “Rednecks’ created their own name. They called themselves that because of all the work the did in the sun their necks would turn red over time. But take me for an example, I’m black and I’m from a small country-like town and when i moved to the city, people called me a redneck or a hillbilly.I don’t necessarily get offended by it because I know where I came from.

Not all most of the time is a term of affection for real down to earth people. Yes some take it otherwise.

I don’t think you really understand what rednecks are. It’s not specifically rural dwellers. It’s more of a specific personality type that tends to reside in rural areas. I’ve known plenty of suburban rednecks.

Where are you from?
