Why do most people assume things about the South?
I’m from Mississippi, and we’re always made fun of, especially up north. I’ve met some people from up there and they tell me that everyone thinks we’re just a bunch of redneck dumb asses. That isn’t true, and most of them haven’t even been out of their own state, much less to Mississippi. Why do people assume we’re dumb? Doesn’t every state have dumb people in it?

Because they’re the ignorant ones. I’m from NC and i get that crap all the time from people. Assuming that some one is uneducated just because of where they’re from is being uneducated yourself.
I am from the North and living in Mississippi. Its pretty much true. You guys are WAY more mean then we are too. Plus you jam all the Jesus Christ stuff down our throats. Oh yeah and the obesity and education levels are pretty bad down. Sorry but it is true in some sort of since. But I doubt that people who live in Mississippi are really go getters, which is alright. Different strokes for different folks. We all have our own perferences. My biggest beef is you guys have a heard mentality. If one person does something you expect everyone to do it. Almost to the point of being pushy then when you are met with resistance you get upset like we are the ones at fault for not adhering to your ways of living. Also very needy people. Hard to relax around you guys too. Most of you just spend all your time trying to prove you arent gay, which infact is VERY gay.
I grew up in NJ but my mother is from MS. I know that people in NJ feel that southern people are stupid. It is just plain old wrong. And, they also feel that all southern folks are racists. That is a load of bull too.
My great grandfather was the biggest racist and he was born in NYC and lived most of his life in Phila, PA. On the other hand, my grandmother from LA was loving and friendly to all people. A black person came to her door needing something she would give it to them…no questions asked. She would even take care of the black kids when they got sick.
It is just people from the northeast who think they are superior to everyone else. Just remember that not ALL people from the northeast are like that. 9 times out of 10 I would get along with you pretty well. And, I can’t see anything in your question that makes you look stupid.
I don’t know what made you ask this question but I would not worry about it. A person that judges you for where you grew up is an idiot anyway. You can not generalize. That is not fair and people have to remember that each person is different.
Well there are dumb and smart people everywhere and people have more or less knowledge about certain particular things.
I have to say from my own experience I have noticed that there is more subtle racism in the West coast and East coast but there is more blatant/open racism in the South. But there is also subtle racism in the South and blatant racism in either of the coasts. However, I feel that there is more open, liberal, sophisticated and progressive conversation/ideas by more people by percentage on the coasts than in the South.
I’m not saying one group or another is smarter but from my own travels that is my opinion of the people that I encountered.
I actually live in the South at the moment due to cheaper cost of living but I really do long for genuine people that follow their own heart and don’t just go along with what the particular, popular fad is at the moment.
For the most part I think that Southerners are more relaxed and do a lot of ‘good eating’ but that seems to be a really bad lifestyle due to the number of obese people and highest levels of health problems in our country.
There are some good points such as they have some good music and some quiet communities but that can be found in a lot of different places all over the world.
My point is that the culture is unique but too old fashioned for my tastes and there are a lot of old fashioned/ignorant people (which are all over the world). But if you are truly carefree and want to drink your life away, listen to country music/old music and gain weight then go ‘have at it’.
Another good point is that they do have educated people but they seem really ‘out of touch’ at times when having conversations that don’t revolve around family, sports or work.
Wow Matt, when you learn to spell I might take you seriously. P.S. I got that thur Missippi educashun… ahuck!
