Why are white folks called rednecks?

It’s a term referring to people who used to labor in the fields in the sun and their necks would get sunburned/red. Black people don’t show sunburns like white people do, thus the terminology.

Not all white folks are rednecks. Rednecks refer to country folk. It comes from the fact that when you work in the Field you get sunburned on your neck hence redneck

Rednecks are generally considered “lower class” or “blue collar”. This type of work often requires a lot of labor outdoors, which can cause the back of the kneck to burn and turn red.

Because when people used to farm all day, their necks would turn bright red working in the sun.

maybe it is becasue their necks get red when they are angry from prejudice.

Not all white folks are called rednecks… the white folks who are backwards thinkers or naive about… everything… and lacking common sense are considered rednecks.

Because those poor souls who spend their days outside don’t turn golden brown and tan but they turn pink on the back of their necks from sunburn.

It’s kind of a deragotory term and some people may take offense to it.

I’m going out on a limb here, but is it because some white folks have such fair skin, that if their necks come into contact with sunlight (w/o sunscreen) they get burned? Which would explain the “redneck” nickname. HAHA um, sorry to answer your question with a question, it’s just a guess.

Because traditionally farmers used to work their land and the sun caused the back of their neck to redden because they work looking at the ground for so long!

because their neck get sunburned from bending over working, thus having red necks. its derogatory because they were considered working class, when it was not proper to be working in the sun all day.

Rednecks are not necessarily white people. Red Necks are people usually from the south people who are hicks or live in the south etc…..

Not all white people are rednecks. Redneck is a term that refers to an uncivilized sort of white people. The actual term comes from the kind of work that these type of people commonly do. They get “red necks” because they are outside working in the sun (i.e. farming, construction) and it makes their necks sunburnt and red.

Being from WV I know the term Redneck extremely well. Back in the day there were a group of sort of a militia who wore red bandanas around there necks.

After the Emancipation Proclamation, the farm labor force expanded to white people too, because slavery was of course outlawed. Many blacks were called “darky” or “negro” and…”black”. So the whites were given a color-related nickname too. After working in the sunny fields, they would get sunburned…thus “redneck”.

the term redneck does not apply to all white people. just a certain sect of the population. they would be the ones who are probably related to their wife before they got married. or carry a pepsi bottle to spit in instead of drinking from. and even possibly too dumb to know exactly who they are supposed to be prejudiced against! does that clear things up a bit?

Well to tell you the truth it is not only white people it could be any type of person. But it is mostly white people because of the way they act. The reason i would call someone a redneck is because of something they say or how they sat it.

Southern US white folks are generally called Rednecks. Often poorly educated but not always. They often have extreme bias towards others from different areas/cultures, have 3 or four broken down pickups in their front yards, drink lots of beer, own lots of guns and have lots of attitude with anyone who dissagrees with their points of view.
