It’s a derogatory term but I believe it stems from the false idea that because of all the sun in the south, people there have sunburned necks.

I read recently that it came from people in the south having a vitamin B deficiency and that made them susceptible to sunburn. I read it on newstarget.com

Honey, rednecks are everywhere!!! Just like any other subculture. But that theory about the sunburned necks is correct.

Because the sun is hotter down there and the majority of them are too thick to protect themselves from getting sunburned. Politically, if they came from England, they would be sporting the wrong colour as our labour party’s adopted colour is red and they generally have a very different approach to life…well they did once upon a time… I’ve got a strange feeling that some of them may have crossed to the other side, in a figure of speech…
