What Is The Difference Between Calling Someone A Redneck And Calling Someone A N*****?
I feel both terms are equally demeaning, so why is it so bad to call someone a n***** but not near as bad to call someone else a redneck? Both imply a negative upbringing, lack of social skills, and a rebellious cocky attitude. Is the only difference the skin color? Is it ok to demean white people but not ok to demean black people? I’m really confused at the double standard. I am from Oklahoma/Arkansas and have been called a hick, a hillbilly, a redneck, an Okie, and an Arkie, all terms meant to characterize me as poor, stupid, and otherwise undesireable. But guess what, I don’t go ballistic over it, it’s no big deal. Why does everyone go nuts if the name n***** is used, but redneck is used all the time? Oh by the way, honky, cracker, and white trash seem to be allowed too. Even Yahoo disallows n***** but allows the white slurs.

There’s no difference. They both can be seen as negative and can both be used as terms of endearment to their own people. Just like the comedian he does the redneck jokes…It’s negative, but he embraces it. But if a black person says it, it’s wrong. If a black comedian uses the word n*gger, he basically embraces it too, but if a white person says it, its wrong.
It’s basically all about preference, perception, and level of malice behind it.
ADDITIONAL COMMENT:
Yahoo has it’s own stipulation, but not all outlets ban racial slurs. I’ve even watched television and heard the word n*gger used and it wasn’t bleeped and it wasn’t cable.
I would agree that there is a large difference. To most blacks N***** refers to racism from the days of slavery. Too bad its becoming mainstream in the rap and r&b genre. I know your offended being called a hick (I would be rather pissed too), but to many people its really not offensive but rather of a way of poking fun. Honky, cracker, and white trash are not typically used with the same intensity of hatred as N*****.
it’s a huge difference! i get that redneck is demeaning but if you knew a little about black history in America you would know that the n was the last word some black people heard right before they died. If you do a little research you’d know. No disrespect, but look it up and maybe you’ll understand better.
White people don’t have an Al Sharpton, hillbillies don’t have a Jesse Jackson, and Christians don’t have a Louis Farrakhan. Without a strong lobbyist group for political correctness, these groups are left subject to all the insults the world cares to hurl their way. Yahoo simply bought into all the PC.
