What characteristics of typical US citizens are most noticable?

10

I am a 19 year old male from Oklahoma, USA, and am completely bothered by the ignorant people I must deal with on a daily basis. From the religious bible-thumpers that are so set in their primitive ways, to the filthy redneck that believes in having a truck lifted 5′ off the ground as a commuter vehicle. My question is what annoys you the most about stereotypical USA? Where do you advise I plan to move to?

Move to Canada. Similar to Americans, but with free health care and no guns.

Somewhere outside of Oklahoma would be a huge start…

As a non-American not living in the US, Americans are often perceived as arrogant, demanding, and ill-mannered hence the term Ugly American.

In one word: Excess

I would say find a blue state and head out that way.

In my stereotype, I’m annoyed that US people are wasteful. They throw away things although it is new or still function well or still can be used. Like they never consider the worth of things, or never think about those poor people who can’t even eat for days (Like in Africa for example).

But about moving, every place have different kind of ignorant people, so for me it does not really matter where am I, I just need not to be one of them.

in fairness, every kind of people has an annoying component. and there are stereotypes about every group. As an American traveling outside the US a bit I have noticed that people from the US can be impatient and loud about it, I have also noted that this often brings out the snarky side of of Cashiers and Service clerks. There also seems to be this idea that it is normal to speak English and speaking anything else is considered a put on affect or sign of refusal to cooperate or cognitive impairment.
If you move outside the US for a while you may find you miss it more than you thought you would. maybe try moving to one of the coasts first, that might fix your dilemma.

When in non English speaking countries I find it annoying that Americans typically expect people to speak English with them. They would walk up to a local and start speaking English without first asking “do you speak English?” or making an attempt in their language. There is an underlying arrogance which says that USA is the best country in the world and everyone must acknowledge it even in their own counties.

Within the US, though, I don’t think there is anything wrong with such arrogance, because it’s just a matter of being proud of the country you live in. Most people in other countries are like that too, except when they travel they have more respect for the country they are visiting.

If you are looking for more culture, more intelligence, more worldliness and that sort of thing, I don’t think you have to leave the USA, although you probably do have to leave Oklahoma. The best places would probably be near big cities like New York, Philly, DC, Chicago, LA, SF-Bay area, Boston, Seattle or Denver. Just make sure to pick a low crime and high income area because there are huge differences within a metropolitan area too.

Your experience of “typical America” is not typical. This is a huge country with huge regional differences. For instance, the majority in my American city are brown and speak Spanish. Is that typical America or are your white Protestants typical America? I don’t think there is any longer one American stereotype. In some ways this is good because it means we’re more diverse, but in others it’s not good because we no longer have one common goal to unite the country.

Come join us in the northeast. We have better education, more sensible living, and more level-headed folks up here. Plus, better beer.
