naming a son “Stoney”?
i was talking with my boyfriend the other day about possible names for future children. I told him I liked the names Stoney and Colton, i thought they sounded like good, strong names, like something a star linebacker would be called. He said they’re too redneck and anyone outside of Texas would make fun of the kids. He even said that if i named a child Stoney, he would call him “Pebbles” for his whole life (this coming from a college graduate, 22-year-old…lol)
Anyway, aside from the story. What do you think of those names, and what state/region are you from?
dang…i guess he wins this one. thanks y’all for being honest.
and we’ve been together over 2 years now, if he thinks im creepy, he probably would have done something about it by now

Comments on naming a son “Stoney”?
Nahh he can start smoking weed and then every one will know why u named him stoney
Stoney?? You have to be kidding me. You know other kids would constantly tease him about it, right?
Hey Stoney, you stoned today? Stoner!
Colton at least has class.
Stoney no..
Colton yes.
& i’m from Canada. Not the ‘red neck’ area
I’m actually from the UK so ignore my opinions if you wish. I wouldn’t choose any of these names personally but Colton is a million times better than Stoney. I never even knew that name existed. Please don’t call your kid that.
I am from California
I would vote no for Stoney, maybe Stone
and I love the name Colton, to me Colton sounds like a western mans name like when the west was won sort of thing.
Or use Stone as a middle name.
Walt Stone
Caleb Stone
Stoney is a definate no-go… it kinda give the impression of “stoner”… also, arent you suppose to be having fun rather than planning things out???? i mean, isn t it kinda too early to think about childern??? he might think you are creepy..
nono
Illinois here… Colton is okay for an adult but he’s got to live with that name for 18 years before his peers stop making fun of him. How about Colton as a middle name?
Stoney .. definitely not.
We have two little kids in our family whose parents have given unusual but not weird names. But they have sentenced the kids to a lot of teasing because they’ve given VERY weird nicknames by combining syllables from the first and middle names. Before the younger one turned 3 she was telling people not to call her that nickname anymore.
I was given a name that today is a bit more common but at the time was very unusual. In addition, my mother did not use a traditional spelling, doubling my grief. It was horrible because teachers would mis-pronounce and mis-spell it. The other kids in the class immediately picked up on it and would just tease me horribly. I hated it, and to this day I hate my name.
So please be thoughtful about what your kids will have to endure because you needed to satisfy your own creativity.
whether or not kids will make fun of another kid depends not on the kid’s name, but on the
kids toughness. If he’s a tough kid and is taught to fight back nobody is going to make fun of his name. As far as the name Stoney, I do not think it sounds strong, or good. Colton also does not sound strong. It sounds too contemporary, its sound like you are trying too hard to come up
with something cool. I don’t think either one sounds redneck, however. Althought I am from the
upper Midwest so my idea of redneck sounding names might differ from yours.
There are many strong Texan names, I suggest you dig a little deeper.
Love Colton, Hate Stoney
Southeast Missouri, USA
KY Not Stoney, Stone is fine. Colton is nice. I’m an educated redneck.
Stoney? Then you can’t blame him for smoking weed. Ever.
