Robbery i think, their was a flash back episode that covered it i think.

He took the rap for Joy’s kidnapping charge because she was pregnant.

He”s right, Earl went to jail instead of Joy because even though she had done the crime he felt sorry for Crabman and the kids. That plot line is what killed the show in my opinion. I for one was a huge fan of the show and never missed it until those prison episodes started running and I lost interest.
Some of the funniest shows were the ones when Joy and Darnell entered the witness protection program and are trying to fit in in suburbia.
