Is the “Darnell” character in My Name Is Earl Racist?
This show makes me angry because they have to show a black man as irresponsible single father who doesnt take care of his kids. Just enforcing negative stereotypes which makes it even harder for us black folks to be successful. Portraying blacks that way makes it harder for guys like me to get a good job. I don’t know about getting the show off the air but shouldn’t someone at least complain?

darnell is very cool !! he’s laid back and doesn’t sweat the small stuff. he looks at life realistically.
The media does portay us in many negative ways, but what station the show come on and time so I can check it out
Look. You’re friggin nuts. Darnell is portrayed in a much better light than any of the other white characters on the show.
Blacks: Please give up on your racist world views, not everything is about color.
Are you kidding, Patty? If anyone watched My Name Is Earl, you may have a reason for anger. Listen, Every single television show, be it cartoon, “reality”, or sitcom, the white father figure is consistently portrayed at a big dumb oaf. Hell, don’t stop at the programming, even commercials! Dad’s too dumb to work the computer/cell phone/gadget lol!
I’ve never seen Darnell as being irresponsible, certainly no more irresponsible than the rest of the show.
I certainly wouldn’t blame Darnell for your job-hunting problems.
You say “shouldn’t someone at least complain,” so go ahead and complain. Write to NBC and let them know.
ive never seen that show but i know what you mean. im black as well and i see alot of racist things on tv and people just laugh about it. but alot of people dont see it the way you do.
Honestly, I think they portray him as the best, most responsible person of the main cast. I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Actually I thought he was the most responsible one on the show. Now Joy is another matter, of course.
You may be seeing something I don’t, after all, with Joy being so over the top trashy, the “Crab-man” would have to look like the sensible and mature member of the family.
Still, he does run his own business. He’s the only principle cast member who’s actually doing anything with his life, and for those two boys, only one of whom is actually Yarnell’s.
