Is it true that the dumbest Americans are the most religious?
I’m British so I’m being stereotypical but I have reason to believe that the most religious Americans are ‘rednecks’ and those that are normally working class. Now what does that tell us about what it takes to believe in religion?

it’s true
It takes humility. Sorry to see so little of it being exercised from across the pond…..
Hmm, there is a correlation between IQ and one’s relgiousness.
That’s a real broad generalazation.
Yes, and numerous statistics and analyses confirm this.
I do believe that, yes.
I mean, come on, anyone with half a brain would have the sense to realize that there is no man up in the sky watching our every move. I mean, seriously! What are they on??
It probably tells us that the poor have greater need for religion, as their lot in life SUCKS. It’s just a tool to make the downtrodden more happy with the scraps they get from capitalists.
yes
A bit presumptuous aren’t you?
I am both a Christian and a Mensan. Are you a Mensan?
Every study on the matter shows an inverse correlation between religousity and intelligence
There seems to be a correlation between intelligence and belief, whichever way you look at it.
It’s true, but I don’t see how their class has anything to do with it. Ever heard of Lindsay Lohan? (Don’t know how religious she is, but she proves that you don’t have to be a redneck or working class to be stupid.)
I don’t know it depends on how many of them voted for the one we have in office now.
Funny that you ask that. I’m reading the God Delusion and a recent study showed a negative correlation between IQ and belief in God/religiosity. So yes….but saying they’re all rednecks is quite wrong, bible thumpers come in all shapes, sizes, and color
It certainly doesn’t mean that all unintelligent citizens believe in God, but I would say that I have ever met a dumb person that hasn’t. On the other hand, I do automatically assume that all smart people are atheists as I must admit. It surprises me when I find a smart person that has religious beliefs (and it does happen.)
Well, I can tell you from my ringside seat right here in the good ol’ U S of A that your observation is very accurate. The poorer, less-educated and more crime-ridden the community, the more churches you’ll find.

http://timeinmoments.wordpress.com/2008/06/14/study-suggests-higher-intelligence-decreases-belief-in-god/ Study suggesting higher intelligence leads to atheism.
Etc. Just google it.
I follow Jesus intently. I am majoring in Economics and minoring in Political Science. I have been on dean’s list for 5 semesters and scholar athlete also for 5 semesters and have a 3.5 overall GPA. My mentor has a Masters in Computer Engineering and works for Ericsson. One of my close friends has a 4.0 in Aerospace Engineering, and she’s a senior.
So, I guess you could call us dumb, but Im not sure why.
Broad generalization… but yes, “rednecks” mostly live in the Bible Belt.
I think there are several groups of religious Americans:
1. People who are just dumb enough to blindly accept something written in a thousands year old book.
2. People who were raised religiously and practice out of habit.
3. People who need something to believe in, because there isn’t much in this world.
4. People who are smart enough to know that none of the stuff in the Bible really happened, but they can still be rules to live by.
i know very religious people who are very intelligent also though. and not all working class people are stupid, where did you get that idea? most people are working class because of economic reasons, not because they’re stupid.
Is it true that the dumbest Europeans are Britons?
Yes, there is an inverse correlation between IQ and religiosity. No, there is not a correlation between IQ and social class.
i would say yes to IQ and religion.. not necessarily to a class of people, since those classes include hundreds to thousands of different religions. . .
in my own experiences, i find that many people, including myself take a different opinion of people once learning their religion. If I’m talking with someone who can’t seem to follow along or keep up, and then I learn they are intensely religious, I usually process that as the excuse. so in turn when someone is up front about being extremely religious, particularly christian, I expect them to be a bit more naive.
I think part of this reason is because so many Christians, especially those raised in a strong religious family are so frequently punished for ‘asking questions’. The bible is the bible is the end all be all bible. If you ask a christian a question about their religion, the answer is always “in the bible…” and i think that same narrow way of thinking is then applied to other aspects of life, even if it isn’t intended that way.
let me add… i don’t think that religious people are dumb. i think that religions take a great deal of effort to suppress intelligence and free thinking in their followers, for the same reasons slave owners took measures to keep slaves from learning to read.
What exactly does “working class” have to do with religion?
I am among the working class, but I’m NOT religious at all. ( I would define working class as: I have a job 5 days a week, I’m not rich and not poor, I fall in the middle)
I know plenty of other working class people who are not religious also, or those that are religious are much more tame about it. But then again, I live in the northern part of the country where we are not typically religiously fanatical and have far better education than down in a lot of the southern states.
The fanatical religious people do tend to be the rednecks with sub-par educations that come from down south. There are of course, exceptions.
So, I would say that your statement is half correct.
