To demoralize, demean, and show his dominance over Bobby.

They raped Bobby to humiliate him.

The river was being “raped” by the city slickers who were building the dam. The mountain people were losing their homes, their towns, and the river itself. Bobby represented the arrogance of the city with his crass comments and constant disrespect of the mountain people, their culture and ways.

A quote from Obadiah 1:3:

“The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?”

It’s pretty obvious who brought Bobby “down to the ground.” The barbarians brought down the Romans and given our current economic situation, it appears that Bin Laden has done the same to the U.S.

Deliverance is a cautionary tale about arrogance and humility.
