I Believe We Struck A Nerve On The Black Peoples Names.?
Yes, I agree their are some very strange white peoples names also. We call those Redneck names. But for the most part we don’t make them up like it’s a contest for the weirdest name out there. I’m mean come on! Semaj? That’s “James” backwards. I’m serious. I know the guy. Or Pajama? Did they get that out of a catalog? How about this new guy, D’brickashaw! Are you kidding me?

lmao…i love it
There is nothing wrong with originality. I’d just hate to be the one to teach these children how to spell their own names!
Some white people do the same thing like name their kids Rex and Apple and Fly. SO wierd
HAHAHAHA! I completely agree with you and all of these overly sensitive people need to settle the ef down. How are we ever going to get past racism if we can’t openly discuss the color of someone’s skin when used in the right context. For all of you freaking out – it is a FACT that black people have very different names. WHY IS IT WRONG OR RACIST TO STATE THAT OUT LOUD. You need to RELAX. Breath. Gosh…
Well, I have to agree with you! I know hundreds of other back women are reading my reply, saying I’m a sell out or whatever but i truly hate to hear these super ghetto fabulous names, that some black ppl come up with. I’m all for making your child’s name unique and different but must they be so eccentric. Maca, Mekhi, is tasteful, but D’Brickahsaw, even I shook My head at that one. This guys gonna be a famous athlete and that’s the name hes gotta spell out for reporters.
My friend once told me that black ppl name their children after things they cant have:
Porche
Mercedes
or they’re favorite drink:
Alize
Come on now! You may think its cute but your child will be tormented for life, plus it is crippling them in the job market. I’m passing up a resume that says Shaniqua, cause it’s not customer friendly in a professional environment! (I’m just being honest)
I one knew a set of sisters named Shabli, Shano, and Shwquinta…..I can only imagine what their kids names will be.
Now to poke fun at other races also, my Hispanic cousin named her daughter Mary-Jane – for obvious reasons, and
then you have white ppl, like Bruce Willis – daughter Scout, and the phoenix family – Rain, River. so we all go a lil too far at times, but black people take the cake!
you better watch it.. here come some black panthers to get you…
Actually, in countries like Brazil, it’s a sign of stupidity not to invent your own names. Repeated names mean repeated people.
It’s a cultural thing.
Well Hollywood is making up names which influences that in everyone. I have heard of people of all nationalities and ethinicties make up names. I never knew them to be called a Redneck for making up their child’s name.
I KNOW THAT FRANK ZAPPA NAMED IS KIDS MOON UNIT, DWEEZIL AND PUNKY BREWSTER IS SOEIL MOON, AND THE PHOENIX KIDS RIVER AND I FORGOT THE OTHER SIBLINGS SO I GUESS YOUR CORRECT.
There was some research somewhere done about how people deal with unique names. They’ve found that boys with ‘normal’ names do better in life then those that don’t.
As far as names goes, think about the poor kid when you name him. How would you be able to handle going through life with a horrid name like Telula (sorry in advance to those with that name)?
Something to think about.. I have an old family name which is common but not the way mine is spelled. Growing up, the Jenny’s, Billy’s, David’s and Mike’s all could have pencils, rulers, lunch boxes with their name already spelled out for them. I felt left out.
Now, wtf is a redneck name? Billy Bob, Jimmy Ray or Bubba Joe? I live in the south and have never met anyone here called that. Yes, there are a lot of biblical names like Luke, Levi or Eli.
So why not give your child a normal first name and save a unique one for the middle name? Then if the child chooses to go ‘normal’ they use their first name, and if they want to be different then use their middle name. Even if they have a normal name, kids today give themselve nicknames to be different. One they’ve chosen. Kinda hard to go by Joe when you’re name is Kulijah
Semaj or Shaquanda or whatever else is still better than taking a name like….FARRAKAHN. I have a good laugh then move on. Its not that big of a deal guys.
Why does it matter to you? Of all the things to worry about or question, you’re really going to waist time concerned with, “Why African Americans choose unique names”? Let me explain so that you can best understand. The reason Black people pick original African or Arabic names (with meaning behind them), or create names, (with no particular meaning, but usually there is – you just aren’t aware of it), is to be unique. To be different, stand out and to seperate themselves from Caucasian people. You have to understand that most African Americans have last names from their ancestor slave masters or names to represent their ancestors actions at that time. Where do you think Freeman came from – Free Man. Williamson came from – Williams Son. When evil white people had slaves, not only did they take away the rights of Black people, but they took away their identity so that their slaves would understand that they were property. They also did this so that slaves could not connect with their family members later on in life. Therefore the evil whites gave the slaves their last name in order to brand them like they would their stock. Today, slowly but surely, many African Americans are aware of that and are changing their names, creating names, or getting a list of African names with meaning to better express their true ancestry, uniqueness and desire to stand out. Now let this sink in, instead of having something really childish and disrespectful to say in response to my answer. Look up what I’m saying and you’ll see it’s the truth. Respect other people’s identity, no matter how outlandish it may seem to you. If you go to Africa and/or hear many Arabic or Swahili names, you will see that they all sound unique and far fetched, that’s because people are not use to hearing them here in the states. But I wouldn’t say anything while you still have white people naming their child Apple and Wolfgang – not that I’m cracking. I’m just happy that (we) African Americans have many beautiful, unique and creative names to choose from, that represent themselves and their heritage.
Actually, it’s been the white celebs lately coming up w/ some “different” names, and I think that they are a reflection of society. It’s not a black thing, or redneck thing anymore. People want their children to have unique names, race isn’t a factor.
