Does the Christian bible say whether or not it is against slavery?

15

America’s bloodiest war could have been avoided if we could have shown those rednecks to the south a passage in the bible that is against slavery. But I haven’t seen one that says it is a sin.
There are also no passages in the bible about discrimination of people of different race.
I guess the guys who wrote it forgot that stuff too.

if you really want to know, contact me privately, and I will explain it, but it requires me to reference the bible, among other sources.

Read the bible it promotes slavery. Tells you how to care for your slave.

The bible was written in a time when slavery was the norm, the Bible is for slavery not against it.

Yeah, except for the fact that the Civil War wasn’t really about slavery, but State’s Rights. If slavery hadn’t existed, it would have been something else the Federal gov’t mandated that the states didn’t agree with that would have lead to the Civil War.

The South openly used the bible as support for its condoning of slavery. Slavery was a common and accepted practice in biblical times and the bible says nothing against it.

The Bible is pro-slavery.

The Bible does not say, “Thou shalt have slaves” or “Thou shalt not have slaves” It does say that slaves should obey their masters and it does say that masters should be kind to slaves. The Bible acknowledges the reality of slavery in the cultural context in which it was written. In the ancient world Slavery had nothing to do with races. Slaves were slaves regardless of race or ethnicity. They were the products of war and of selling oneself to pay off debts. There was no bancruptcy. As bad as slavery was then, slavery in the US was even worse because it was racial prejudice. It was Christians who led the anti-slavery movement in Great Britain and the US.

The Bible clearly supports slavery. There are rules for how to treat your slaves, how long someone can be a slave, etc. God even commanded his chosen people to take slaves more than once.

A couple of points about the Civil War:
1) The South was not full of rednecks at the time. Most of the Southerners that were concerned about their rights were very wealthy and polished.
2) The Civil War was not primarily about slavery. There were many issues, slavery being only one. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
3) Slavery exists without religion.

Bible Is Conspiracy @ 12:01 am #

Yes it does.
Exodus 21:2-6
If thou buy a Hebrew servant….

Exodus 21:7
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant….

Exodus 21:20-21
If a man smite his servant or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand, he shall be surely punished; notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his money.

Exodus 21:26-27
And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake. And if he smite out his manservant’s tooth, or his maidservant’s tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth’s sake.

Exodus 21:32
If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver.

No, God was all for slavery, and jesus never spoke out against it. God even had laws as to how slaves were to be treated. The mythical Yahweh loves slavery.

LightRevealer @ 12:44 am #

As far as I know, the only “slavery” that was allowed was what they called an indentured servant. He had to work for someone 7 years. Then got off the hook. I guess he only got room and board. Maybe taught a skill. And maybe a little cash to move on with. They had a Jubilee Year every so often where they freed all slaves.

1 Timothy 1:8-11 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. (9) We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, (10) for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine (11) that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

The civil war was not about slavery. The anti-slavery platform was only a side issue. The northern states were trying to control the industry in the southern states which erupted into the war.

To get back to your question, the god of the bible does condone slavery. In fact part of the law handed down to Moses from god included how to treat slaves.

To my knowledge there is nothing in the Christian Bible about slavery. 300 years later when Mohammad wrote the Koran there was something in that Bible that said that they were not to enslave people but over time they figured out how to get around that by saying that they can’t enslave people of there own faith allowing them to enslave others. For the record they made slaves out of Africans for over 500 years. In South America the average life span of a slave was less then one year because of being over worked. Hollands main source of income for over 250 years was from the slave trade. As for what was left out? In those days it was common for the victor of any battle the people captured became slaves. Read about history, it is amazing what one can learn.

John r @ 3:10 am #

It doesn’t say one way or the other. It tells masters to be good masters and slaves to be good slaves, but neither supports nor condemns the practice.
Many parts of the bible have been perverted by “man” to support all kinds of crap, and this was/is one of them.
Jesus said to teach the Gospel to all nations. That is what God says about discrimination.

As for avoiding a bloody war, KainPhoenix is right. It was not about slavery. If it had been the south could never have fielded an army as there weren’t enough slave owners. Since the North won the war they got to write the history.
