Do you think rednecks really are racist?

13

I always thought rednecks were really racist, but a few weeks ago I went to visit my cousin who lives in an extreme redneck area,I’m half black/half white and the people were actually quite friendly to me.I mean, there were rebel flags everywhere, but it’s really not that bad.

What do you think?
Also,it was a 100% white community.

it a stereotypes!!

Some are, some aren’t. But I can see why a majority of them would be, because usually their families raise them in close minded, remote areas (which isn’t their faults), and have little exposure to minorities.

THAT IS SO RACIST. By judging that rednecks are racist, you’re being racist yourself. You can’t judge a whole group of people, you have to judge them individually.

Unfortunately, to some extent, I do know plenty of rednecks and I would say only a 1/4 are racist. Surprising I know!

chaoshelp18 @ 11:02 pm #

i guarantee not all of them are.

Maybe they didn’t know you were half black?

Idk what to say about them. Wherever there’s a trailer park and/or a confederate flag, you will NOT find me there.

No, that’s just a stereotype. Southern white folks (next to black folks) are among the NICEST folks I’ve ever met. I know it sounds odd, but when I went to visit my aunt in South Carolina, just random people on the street would greet you and say “how are ya?” when they pass by you. Now growing up north, that was just so odd to me since we’re all “go-go” and reserved.

I think “rednecks” tend to be racist out of ignorance more than anything so not really always their fault.

Also, calling a group of people “rednecks” is not racist, it’s stereotyping or being prejudice. Racism is believing that an entire race of people is better or worse than another race because of inherent traits and abilities. Rednecks are not a race of people, they are part of the white/Caucasian human race. That sounds weird at the end, but hope you get my point.

Redneck is a word invented to make fun mainly of southern people, and yeah, I live in the south (KY) We’ve got lots of rebel flags–they mean many things and it does not mean you are a racist, it means you are a southerner. The majority of people who have them don’t even think of it being a black/white thing, it’s just a Southern thing. My youngest daughter and her husband wear the leather, have the tattoos, thing in the eyebrow, whatever that’s called. They have the rebel flag, several of them, in fact, and there is not one racist bone in thier bodies, they have black friends as well as white–they just have plain old friends. It is sad that people up north and other places have poisoned people’s minds about Southerner’s having the rebel flag, it does not mean they have anything at all against any other race of people, we’re all in the same boat, just trying to get by.

Never judge people by the color of their necks. Seriously.

I’ve met real Appalachian, dyed-in-the-wool, seventh-generation rednecks who were thoughtful, creative and wise people. I’ve also met career academics (from Cambridge, no less) who were lazy, self-serving, arrogant, useless jerks who lived well only because Mummy and Daddy bought them an advanced degree.

…Thank god I don’t hold any grudges!

So, my advice is: think for YOURSELF, always.

No, they’re not. Listen to Jeff Foxworthy sometime, he has a ton of definitions of a redneck. I’ve actually fit into some of the categories, I didn’t even know I was a redneck. Heck, I didn’t even know what one was…
