Karma is the idea of your actions having consequenses, for example if you do something good or help some one, something good will happen to you, and vise versa. Just watch a few episodes and you’ll get it.
Earl created his ever-present “List” because he is trying to appease Karma–he led a no good, thieving, corrupt lifestyle and everything was bad for him—when he did something good -good things happen to him–so now he runs around trying to right all his previous wrongs….thus the “List”
Earl did bad things to people and was a petty criminal. He then buys a lottery ticket, which turns out to be a $100,000 winner. He then gets hit by a car and loses said ticket. Earl concludes that this was the consequence of bad karma–for all the bad things he had done to people in the past. Earl then resolves to correct these wrongs by making a list of them and righting them.
I enjoyed the show until Earl went to prison. I find the show much funnier when he’s out in society.
If you Googleded up karma (like I did). You’ll also find that in step with the Earl character’s limited education, he has his own opinion and defination for karma based on what happens to him on the show.
Eg. He stole the money from a man’s back pocket inside the store he then bought the winning lottery ticket from. He is just noticing his win when he gets hit by a car and looses the ticket.
After he endures a lot of pain and then does a good deed, that winning ticket floats back to him on the wind.
