Are there so called Hicks and Rednecks outside of the U.S. such as Europe?

I am talking about the stereotypical “White Trash”

I dont think so, but when I mentioned it to my parents they said that it is common everywhere you go. They said that Europe as a whole is not as culturally different in vast nature as you may believe.

Some of this may depend on the country itself. Larger nations, such as Germany and France, would have more chances for this to happen than smaller nations like Luxembourg or San Marino.

I have heard from a few people–strictly as an outlander, I’ve never been there–that the Bavarians have sometimes been called “Germany’s ‘hillbillies’” as compared to the Saxon and Prussian ethnic groups. OK, I said I have never been there so I don’t know personally.

Some may think that the Gascons from southwest France are different, culturally, than the Parisians. Again, no idea, but this was just something I heard.

Maybe it all stems from people in “Group A” or “Section A” feeling superior to those from other groups. Some things never change, no matter where you go.

Germans do have differences due to the development of Germany from small duchies and the ties to many of the Royal families of Europe. Bavarians have been called “hillbillies” mostly when American servicemen told stories of different groups in the United States. I was born in the Rhineland and the group that got the most ire were the Swabians “Swabs”. The Eastern side of the Rhine river valley has many extinct cinder cone volcanoes and the people of this area (Swabisch Gmund, Swabisch Hall) with their dialect differences and the cultural “quirks” have been the brunt of jokes and legends. Now of a general group hated in Europe I would say that the Gypsies were hated more than most. Now as a proud American of German descent (Rhineland), I would say we consider the French as a subculture of life lower than even a Redneck!!!! hahaha
