a little of both. it’s human nature to assume that those who speak differently from us are stupid or uneducated. the word “barbarian” comes from Roman times, and the Latin word meant ‘babbler’. basically, if you didn’t speak latin, you were an uncivilized idiot. human nature hasn’t changed between then and now.
but at the same time, ‘rednecks’ and the redneck accent have been long associated in media, on television, etc, with stupid and backwards people. so, that’s what we associate it with in our minds, Nascar and beer and chewing tobacco, when that can hardly be true for everyone from the south. just like we associate a British accent with tea and overly polite people, when that’s not necessarily true at all.
Foxworthy, Gump, Pyle are all funny to laugh at because of a) that prejudice against people who talk differently, and b) another natural desire to think we’re better than other people. think court jesters.

Well when you categorize people and throw them into lumps based on stereotypes you are being prejudice cause you are pre-judging them. As for whether there are smart people plenty and many liberals in the south hard as it was to grasp from my prior to beliefs when I left California and came to Texas.

I happen to be from the south and I don’t think I fall into that stereo type I have never written anything like that nor have I ever chosen to speak in that manner . At least we have southern hospitality !

Yes, I know how you feel I’m from Michigan and I moved to Florida Last year I HATE IT people down here still think the war of north and south is still going on. It pisses me off when they call me a Yankee I mean get over the Yankee thing. All I see down here is pill popping and meth users every where in the town I live in. So Meany people down here are so uneducated I go to college and when I say that they look at me like they cant believe some that lives in town is doing something with their life and everything is backwards here. I mean i haven’t meet anyone that is doing something with their life. Thank god I’m moving in two days and getting around maybe some normal people. So i know how you feel.

I’m from the mid west,over 40 years i lived there. i lived in the south for 10 years.now i live out west. I’ve been here over 2 years.in all of the states i have lived in i have found they all have their smart people and their stupid people. my spouse was born and raised in the south. no one in their family ever owned a ford truck, chewed tobacco and none of them have a southern accent. as for roll models,forest gump and gomer pyle were names of charactors.jeff foxworthy is a stand-up comedian. he his not a trashy talking person, like chris rock is in his stand-up. jeff is a hard working person and does a very good job and makes very good money. in answer to your question, yes you are predjudice.
