A Baby Name Question?

16

okay my husband is from West Virginia and very much so a redneck and I am from California. So I am a little more open in considering names. I love the name Kiyana (also spelled Kianna) but my husband says its ethnic. He’s not racist but he wants our daughter to have a irish name (because we are both irish). But I really would like to know do you think the name sounds ethnic?

I looked it up in the Baby Name Wizard Book (great book, I’d recommend buying it) and Kiana does show up under the African-American header if that is what you meant by ethnic.
As for irish names here is a link to popular irish names:http://www.behindthename.com/top/lists/1…
Another irish names sites with pronunciations & history of names(cool):http://www.babynamesofireland.com/
I LOVE Irish girls names, my favorites are:
Aoife (EE-fa), Aine (AHN-ya), Caoimhe/Keeva, Maeve, Maeva, Orlaith/Orla
How abut Keeva instead of Kianna?
Also, Kaia is a Norwegian name, similar but different.
Other names you might like: Keeley, Ainsley, Aylin, Kyla, Tehya, Tayla, Teagan
I’m envious, I wish my husband would have let me use an irish girls name but he vetoed them all.
Good luck!

It’s a nice name and besides, no one really cares where your name is from.

First of all, “Irish” is as ethnic as any other sort of name. Does he mean “ethnic” as in, say, African-American?
I think you should check some Irish baby name lists. My hunch is that you’ll find something very similar to the name Kiyanna that one of you will be willing to compromise on.
My husband and I didn’t have very many names in common. And our children went nameless for days because we had such a hard time making up our minds!
I will say, though, that my preeclampsia, bed rest, 52 hours of induced labor, 3 hours of pushing, fetal distress, maternal distress, and emergency c-section definitely earned me some sympathy points our first go round. After that, I think he felt he should go along with whatever I wanted!
I don’t recommend that route if you can possibly avoid it, though. :) Better just to compromise on a name or have a list of mutually acceptable names and then wait and see what your newborn looks like.

It may sound ethnic, but I can tell you is such a beautiful name. Kianna. Is about time to choose something unusual.

How about Cliona, it’s an Irish name and sounds similar to Kianna (pronounce it Klee’ona)?

pjt @ 9:23 am #

It does sound ethnic but what doesn’t? I wanted Irish names too but I quickly found out that there are similar names from almost all ethnicities and most names can be Irish. I personally like Kiyana.

oh girl, i have the perfect name, if our son (born in dec.) would have been a girl, his name would have been………IRISH…..isn’t that the coolest? by the way the name u have picked out is beautiful, but trust me, i know from experience that if your man dosen’t like the name u r in love with, u should probably accept it and figure out something else, otherwise u will waste alot of your energy trying to persuade him on something u have no chance changing his mind about. good luck!!

Kiyana is a beautiful name, and I think that if you pair it with an Irish middle name it would sound great. (And you would both get what for your little girl.)

Sophia (wisdom)
Beatrice
Raisha Therese (that’s my daughter’s name)
Frances Angela (that’s my real name)
